Using sentence frames, sentence starters and signal words to improve language
Check out this multi brief by Erick Hermann about supports in the classroom. Sentence frames, sentence starters, and signal words are great supports to help your learners access content and communicate. These are examples of supports that can be written into your language objectives.Shout out to Bethesda for writing language objectives for ALLs
On Monday I had the opportunity to lead Bethesda's PLC around writing language objectives for ALLs. On Tuesday, Leslie Waltz, Math Effectiveness Coach was walking around Bethesda and found Jacqui Berg, 3rd grade monolingual teacher busily revamping her Language Workshop objectives to include supports, using her "Colorin Colorado" language function chart as a reference.

Language Objectives Help us Plan with Intentionality
Language Objectives Help us Plan with Intentionality
One reason the use of language objectives is important, along with our content objectives, is because it allows teachers to intentionally plan for the language that is necessary to access content. The planning of language objectives provides teachers the opportunity to prepare the supports that are critical for students to attain the outcome. The language objective ensures students and teachers know what the success criteria is and what they are striving to achieve. Refer to the example below from Jamie Dittman-Rebholz at Banting Elementary.

Opportunity to Learn
TDP: Success for ALLs
As an ALL, academic language learner, we have the unique opportunity to learn about how language is taught through content. Our students benefit from learning the language of Math, Science, Social Studies, Literacy, and Social and Instructional Language; therefore, I encourage you to sign-up for the TDP: "Success for ALLs". During this course, you will learn how to infuse language into your content area which will allow ALL students to access the curriculum. Through the knowledge gained in this TDP, your planning and instruction will provide a differentiated approach to reaching ALL students.
