Examining Curriculum with an Eye for Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Students

Celebration!!!

Examining Curriculum with an Eye for

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students

This week the SDW coordinator team had the opportunity to look deep into our curriculum frameworks to think about how student assets, academic language, differentiation, supports, language objectives and assessment fit into our curriculum design process in SDW. The collaboration, conversation, and team building was a HUGE success!  Thank you to SDW coordinators for being willing and ready to work through what it means to examine curriculum with an eye for culturally and linguistically diverse students. We are ALLS!

Reflective Questions for Writing Language Objectives and ELD Department Meeting PLC Notes

Reflective Questions for Writing Language Objectives

Is it student-friendly?
Will it lead to academic language growth? Or is this language that students already know/can use?

Is it observable?
Is it measurable? How will we assess students in relation to it? How will students self-monitor/self-assess their progress in relation to it?
Is it specific?  Is it realistic?  Is it time-appropriate?

How does this lesson fit with the larger progression of the unit? What is the connection to the previous lesson? The next lesson? The larger goals of the unit?

November 27th PLC Notes

#GOALS:
  • By January of 2018 all ESL co-taught focus classrooms will have a language objective posted.

PLC Topics
We will focus our efforts on Criteria 2 highlighted part of the Oracy Adult learning Framework Cycle. Creating language objectives is essential for a content-based language instruction. It defines the way students will use language (vocabulary, language structures, etc.) to accomplish the objectives. Having a language goal helps identify and have ready the supports needed.
  • What are language objectives?
  • How do I create a language objective?

Global Education at Heyer Elementary School!
5k DL students from Sra. Schell Campos classroom had the first meeting with their peers from a kindergarten classroom in Bogota, Colombia through Skype video conference.
They were able to ask and respond to questions about school communities in both countries using their Spanish and English skills!
