District Dual Language PLCs
We never seem to get photos of the learning, but I want you all to know how committed your leaders are to learning from you and learning with you what it takes to develop a research based Dual Language Program.

We took some significant time to look at our teaching practice data and found some areas that we think, if we grew our leadership of these practices in our DL Classrooms by improving not only what feedback we give but also how it is delivered, we can deepen multilingual practice together.

We took lots of time to really dig deep into the two most substantial theories for effective multilingual learning:
Academic Oral Language Scaffolds (BICS/CALP) and Metalinguistic Awareness.

Take a look at some of the data we discussed. Data in Table

THE TEXT AUDIT

DL Classroom Audit New Process

DL Classroom Book Audit
I will be conducting an audit of 2nd-5th classroom libraries, this is solely my work. I will scheduling time to be in your classrooms. Although, your help would be greatly appreciated it is NOT required. Please contact me if you are able to assist me, your commitment will not be more than two hours.

The goal for this audit is to take inventory of the condition, genre, and grade level of books in each classroom. We will not document books by title or author. Please do not add to the count any books that are two or more grade levels below or above grade level, or your own personal books. We will focus on quantity and quality in all genres. This will expedite the process and will give us information to make an informed decision for the future purchasing. Please use the spreadsheet below to document the following categories.

Total Spanish books               Total English books
% of Total Spanish Fiction      % of total English Fiction
% of Spanish Non-Fiction       % English Non-Fiction

Instructions:
Click on the link for your school, look for the tab with your name to document your total number of books in each category.

We are on our way to awarding the State of Wisconsin's first recipients of the Seal of Biliteracy. Seniors who are able to demonstrate excellence in English and a partner language will soon be invited to learn more about the process for application.

  • Communicate ideas effectively with diverse audiences in English and one partner language.
  • Translate their ideas into appropriate actions to improve conditions, i.e. they have taken action
  • They are Seniors
  • They are service learners

Spanish Language Certificate

This comprehensive program provides you with the tools you need to communicate effectively in Spanish. Whether you are interested in learning Spanish for work, travel or socializing, our courses provide you with the essential language skills and vocabulary to communicate with confidence. In addition, you obtain your certified oral proficiency rating from the renowned American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), recognized by government agencies and employers nationwide.
To enroll in the certificate program, simply register for your first Spanish course!
Note: The UWM SCE Spanish Certificate program is noncredit and cannot be used for teaching certification. This is a noncredit enrichment program. Progress and courses completed with UWM-SCE Languages are marked by Continuing Education Units. CEUs are not transferable to college or university transcripts. The Spanish Certificate Program is not applicable towards any teaching certifications or licensures.
Earn the certificate by completing Spanish I-VI core courses, one elective course and satisfactorily fulfilling the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview Test within a three-year period. You may complete your core coursework in either face-to-face or online sessions. Face-to-face and online courses can be interchanged. If you choose to take most of your core courses in face-to-face sessions, you must also complete an elective course (online students are exempt from this requirement).
You must complete the ACTFL OPI after your core coursework is finished. The ACTFL OPI is a proctored, telephonic interview that can either take place at SCE’s offices in downtown Milwaukee or remotely (restrictions apply).
