SDW featured on the Teaching Channel! Banting Dual Language video showcase! And... Language Objectives, Oh My!

Teaching Channel in SDW!!!

Last spring Banting Elementary's Jessica Hegg and Kris Carey had an opportunity to showcase their amazing teaching practices around dual language, ELLS, and co-teaching. I was so excited to be a part of this project in partnershipwith the Teaching Channel and ConfianzaELLs. Please check out these videos to witness strategies that support language development through content learning.

Language Objectives
What Language do we need to access the content?

Did you know that language objectives are just as important as content objectives? Language objectives ensure that students can access content. In order for students to communicate their learning they need access to language. We are all academic language learners (ALLs) when it comes to learning a new content and new academic language.

There are many different ways to write a language objective. One way that was delivered in summer institute was thinking about the language function, the content, and the support. Please see this example from a high school co-taught classroom.

  1. This is amazing Jessica and Kris. All the work you do for our Waukesha scholars is what teaching is all about. Your attention to detail, connective lessons and most importantly the connection you make with students makes you both masterful.
