Teaching for Biliteracy Summer Session Strategy Review

Newly Hired Dual Language Teachers
experienced these practices in their professional learning on August 21st to create linguistically and culturally responsive practices recognizing that Dual Language Learners are:

  • Learning a Minority Language in a Majority Culture-they ALL must speak to read and write
  • Learning Both Languages Simultaneous and have resources in both that they apply to their learning
  • Striving for Multicultural and Global Competence (and so are we!)

Strategies for DL Leaders

  1. Know your learners cultural and linguistic profile.
  2. Think-Frame-Pair-Share
  3. 1:1 paired work on ONE product
  4. Examine and challenge our bilingual bias
  5. Bias is socially constructed and internal- BE AWARE
  6. 100% participation
  • Colored markers
  • Numbered heads together (call on the position)
  • Talking turn chips
7. Bilingual pairs
8. Plan sentence frames and starters
9. Teach relationship making
  • Use fishbowl

10. Read and “Say something, close”
